Taxes

Overview / General Information

Residents of New Market are required to pay taxes to the Town and Shenandoah County because of the difference in services each locality provides. A large percentage of your County tax dollars goes toward the school system. The taxes you pay to the Town of New Market go towards such services as around-the-clock police protection, streetlights, sidewalk maintenance and repair, snow removal, tourism, and economic development, maintenance of the Community Park and Rebel Park, and support of non-profit organizations in town such as the New Market Fire and Rescue Department and the New Market Area Library.

If you should have received a tax bill and have not, please contact the Town Office to determine if there is an assessment issue or a mailing issue. If you receive a tax bill in error, please contact the Shenandoah County Commissioner of Revenue Office at (540) 459-6170. The Commissioner of Revenue prepares our tax information so their office should be contacted first for any errors in billing. If you have been taxed improperly, their office will adjust and forward the information to the Town Treasurer’s office where corrections will be made.

Vehicle License Fee

The vehicle license fee is $25.00 for each motor vehicle, trailer, and semi-trailer and $15.00 for motorcycles. This fee is charged once a year during the first half tax billing cycle to all vehicles garaged within the Town of New Market as of January 1st of a given calendar year. The Town of New Market receives its information regarding vehicles through the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. When you register your vehicle with the DMV you inform them of where the vehicle is garaged/stored, that information is then sent to the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office who in turn submits information to the Town before the distribution of taxes.

If you move in or out of New Market, it is imperative that you contact the DMV, the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, and the Town of New Market to inform them of your move.

If you sell, trade, or purchase a new vehicle your taxes will not change until January 1st of the following year. However, we would ask that you inform the Town of New Market and the County’s Commissioner of Revenue of any changes to your vehicles.
